Following a wet
spring, this year we've seen an increase in mushroom ingestions in
dogs. There are some mushrooms that are quite toxic to humans and
pets. Many of these have look-alikes that are less toxic and can be
difficult to identify properly without consulting a highly experienced
mycologist.
The
vet clinics in Steamboat have had several suspect Death Cap (white
cap) mushroom toxicity in dogs within the past few weeks. This mushroom
has been spotted in Routt county this year, likely from all of the
rain we've had. If your dog eats this mushroom, it is reported to
be 100% fatal. There is no reliable treatment for this poisoning.
Signs include sudden collapse, seizures, stiff-legged posture and
cardiac arrest. Liver failure ensues in most cases.
Please,
scout your yard for any mushrooms and destroy them. Supervise your
dog when out in the forest. If you notice your dog eating ANY mushroom,
it's probably a good idea for us to induce vomiting, administer charcoal
and run bloodwork.
